A smart thermostat adds efficiency, convenience to your home

This time of year, it’s not uncommon to use the heat in the evenings for those 40-something nights and the air in the afternoon, when North Carolina’s version of Fall serves up an 80-degree October afternoon.

So, when do you remember to switch it back and forth? When it’s 65 degrees in your house at 5 a.m., or when it’s 78 degrees when you get home from work? Solving this riddle is just one benefit of installing a smart thermostat in your home.

If you’re lying in bed, and you know you forgot to turn the heat on, you can stick an arm out of the covers, grab your phone and do it on an app that’s connected to your thermostat. That same app can help you turn on the AC at 3 p.m., when you realize you walked out the door without turning off the heat.

Smart thermostats can also:

Set up automatic adjustments — Like one for October that runs the heat from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. and the air from, say noon to 6 p.m.

Alert you to issues — Some units monitor excessive humidity or ventilation problems.

Decrease your energy bill — By optimizing when the unit runs, based on whether or not you’re around, you can use the HVAC unit less often.
