Planning a Fall home checklist? Here’s a few items to get you started

As the weather turns cooler, it’s time to get your home ready for the winter months. A good way to do that is to create a Fall checklist of items that can help get your home ready for the change of seasons.

Here are a few ideas to help get you started:

    Have your HVAC inspected

This could really go on the Spring checklist as well, since it’s a good idea to have your unit inspected twice a year. This ensures the unit is ready for you to flip that switch from “Cool” to “Heat.” At Comfort Shield, we perform a number of checks, like:

    • Inspecting outdoor unit coolant levels and pressures
    • Checking and adjusting the thermostat
    • Inspecting the wiring, contacts, capacitors and relays
    • Inspecting the evaporator coil
    • Inspecting and clearing the drain line
    Check your roof

Experts suggest having a professional have a look at your roof every three years or so. This is a way to catch minor issues, like loose or missing shingles, that can lead to larger roofing issues.

    Clean your gutters and downspouts

Gutters and downspouts lead water away from your house. Clogs in either part of this system can result in water accumulating near your foundation. This can lead to high moisture levels — or standing water — in your crawlspace. This can result in mold, electrical issues or structural damage to your home’s foundation.

Check smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors

These are lifesaving devices that should be tested monthly. Batteries should also be replaced at least once a year.
