Add security to your home or business with outdoor lighting

It’s impossible to prevent and deter all crime. There are things one can do, however, to reduce the risk of it happening at your home or business.

One of those is fairly simple: Let there be light.

Outdoor lighting around a home or business makes that location a less desirable target for potential break ins. In fact, a study conducted by UNC Charlotte’s Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology indicates that about 60 percent of convicted burglars said that a well-lit exterior influenced them to choose a different target.

Here are a few ways that outdoor lighting can enhance the security around your home or office:

Deterrence
  • Visibility: Well-lit areas make it harder for intruders to hide or approach unnoticed.
  • Deception: Lights imply that people are around, which is a deterrent for would-be theives.
  • Reduced Opportunity: Bright lights can discourage criminals from targeting your property.
Detection
  • Motion-Activated Lights: These lights can illuminate areas of activity, alerting you to potential intruders.
  • Surveillance Cameras: Outdoor lighting can improve the quality of footage from security cameras.
Improved Visibility
  • Safe Pathways: Well-lit walkways and driveways reduce the risk of accidents and injuries.
  • Enhanced Security: Better visibility allows you to identify potential threats more easily.
Forming a strategy
  • Placement: Place lights to illuminate dark corners, entry points and areas around your property.
  • Variety: Combine different types of lighting, such as floodlights, spotlights and pathway lights, for optimal coverage.
  • Energy Efficiency: Consider using energy-efficient LED bulbs to reduce costs and environmental impact.
  • Smart Lighting: Smart lighting systems allow you to control your lights remotely, schedule usage and integrate with other smart home devices.
