Imagine a summer without a perfectly cool home, or a winter shivering indoors. Your HVAC system is the unsung hero, silently working year-round to keep your family comfortable. But like any hero, it needs a support system. In this case, it’s you.
You don’t need Google to tell you how expensive replacing a HVAC unit can be, but fortunately, there are ways you can extend the life of your current system. Let’s look at a few:
Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance
Your car needs regular oil changes. We’re supposed to get yearly physicals. And, believe it or not, HVAC units also need regular check-ups.
Schedule a maintenance visit, and make sure the company you choose does the following:
- Check refrigerant levels and pressure (low levels mean the system works harder).
- Clean condenser and evaporator coils (dirty coils restrict heat transfer).
- Inspect electrical connections and components (loose wires can cause safety hazards or failures).
- Lubricate moving parts (reduces friction and wear).
- Check thermostat calibration (ensures accurate temperature control).
- Inspect ductwork for leaks (major cause of energy loss).
- Assess overall system performance and airflow.
Air flow is everything
Buy the cheapest filter you can find at the grocery store, and change it out in your home every month. This inexpensive piece of regular maintenance can add years to the life of your unit.
Dirty air filters require the system to work harder to meet the demands of your thermostat, which adds strain to any HVAC unit.
Speaking of thermostats
It’s 2025. Your phones, tablets and TVs are all smart. Why shouldn’t your thermostat be as well?
A programmable thermostat can be changed anywhere via an app, allowing you to give the unit a break when you’re gone for long periods — or turn up the heat from under the covers on a cold winter morning.
